No Good Stories in Games

I know that there are some really good ones out there but it seems like less and less games are having a good narrative and just focus on gameplay. Don't get me wrong here, I like my gameplay to be top notch but I also like a good story too. Does anyone know why this is?Also, this is a little off topic but, does anyone think that games are getting easier? No Good Stories in Games
Devs need better writers, and I love to write. No Good Stories in Games
yeah i found that out too, but it dosent bother me
ill say its bc most games focus on the Multiplayer than the Single player. but i think you are right. i cant remember what was the last game i played with an amazing story. i think it was Lost Oddysey.
Part of it caused by the fact that with true story driven game such as Final Fantasy you need to be able to play for long ammounts of time and very often otherwise the storys can become hard to follow and eventully making the game impossible to play, where as games with little story such as CoD, Halo %26 Gears give many of todays game (myself NOT included) a quick adrenaline fix without the long twisting storys, which means that people who don't have alot of time to play games don't have to worry about keeping up with the story, and with the majorty of gamers now been working adults, these are the type of games that attract them.
I agree, most games I find so uninteresting I skip through cutscenes. The gameplay might be fun as hell, keeping me intothe game. However, I have a mass collection of PC games to solve this problem.
I like the good old days when games were hard and had great stories.Like in the 90's.
Im happy with the story's on games i know they arnt movie quality but they are enough to keep me entertained.
I'd say it's because developers want to make money from selling for multiplayer, and they're afraid little Jimmy 12 year old might get confused by having a story with themes and concepts, so they dumb it down (gameplay too) so he can just go around lol right trigger I win without having to think too hard.

There you go, people act like every game has to feature online multiplayer, especially any game with a gun, its come to the point that MP is the most important part of a game and single player is just a novelty. I find the games that have the best narratives are the ones that ignore the online multiplayer trend.
Bioshock had both. amazing gameplay and a unique storyline.
Umm...The DarknessBioshockHalf-LifeMASS EFFECT!Come on man there are still games out there with good stories. Don't give up hope yet.

Stories weren't really good in previous gens. Some of the best games of all time had pretty weak stories. The only people who cry about games having no story are ones that aren't capable of reading and comprehending books.
That may be true but it also means that we now have way more good stories then waay back when.If you want a good story you should play some of these games-Shadow of the Colossus (one of my favorite PS2 games)-MGS4-Mass Effect-Orange Box for Half-Life 2-Half-Life 1-CoD4-Bioshock-KOTOR I and II-Indigo Prophecy-Heavy Rain
Dev. just need new writters. and games are getting easier except for a few games.
^To be completely fair most games don't lend themselves well to have a well thought out narrative. Take the large number of FPS we get these days, they work better with an overarching story more than indepth story because a really indepth story would break the pacing of the game. Like I see someone mentioned COD4, well that an example of an overarching story, and indepth story would be something like MGS which has all the ingredients of a story, like character development, personal conflict etc. Back in the days games couldn't be ambitious enough to have big stories and now everyone is crazy for the online shooter, that's what people line up around the block for, so even though the tech is there and the game types that do lend themselves well to a strong narrative are there, we still don't get it because this is a business after all, and the audience has shown they rather chase each other around a map then sit through a well written story. In terms of precentage's yeah its a small number of games with strong narratives, but 5% of say 100 million is 5 million, in other words there are alot of games that have good strong stories.
A lot of games change in development, and that puts a lot of strain on the writers.
Yeah they are, cause we buy video games for stories not gameplay.

This is well thought. I had never thought of that but I could be one of the reasons behind it.
